GREENFIELD — Contractors and engineers working on the town’s future Olive Street parking garage updated stakeholders on aspects of the project like parking, utility movement and street closures on Thursday afternoon.

Olive Street is currently closed to through traffic but open to those going to businesses on the street. Representatives from Daniel O’Connell, the construction firm hired by the town and Skanska, the engineering firm on the project, said the middle portion of the street will be closed starting in late September or early October when workers have to move three deep utility pipes that are currently under the site of the garage.

Those pipes will be moved under The Greenfield Recorder lot next to the garage. That lot will be redirected to the lot directly next to the Magpie building on Bank Row.

The project representatives said they’re limiting the garage to four stories because of budget constraints. The garage went from about 350 spots to roughly 275 because of the restrictions.

Pete Sickler and Joseph Imelio from Daniel O’Connell, the construction firm, said they they would be providing weekly updates to all stakeholders and the businesses and apartments that are near the site. Those will also be posted on the town’s website.

Imelio said they will be doing soil work after they finish rerouting the utilities in December. After that, there will be a wait time until the weather breaks in the spring, when they will begin to work on the garage itself.

He said the work this fall will be manageable for most businesses around the area and the work in the spring will be contained to the fenced-in area.

“Next spring and summer you’ll see some action,” he said. “The garage will go up quickly.”
