What happened on Sept. 11, 2001

Amongst all the wailing and recriminations concerning the U.S. “failure” in Afghanistan certain things are virtually unmentionable. It goes unmentioned that the U.S. war on Afghanistan was a vast international crime, a violation of the UN Charter and a violation of international law. But of course our attack was justified by the 9/11 attack. “The 9/11 attack,” “the 9/11 attack,” “the 9/11attack” — these words are repeated over and over again — like the mantra of an imperial religion. Our crime is justified by “their” crime this mantra tells us.

Of course everyone knows who attacked the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, because the U.S. government has told us, and anyone who questions the official U.S. government account is a nutty “conspiracy theorist.” But there is a problem that author David Ray Griffin has pointed out in his book “Christian Faith and the Truth Behind 9/11: A Call to Reflection and Action.”

Griffin has called our attention to the following. Shortly after 9/11 happened, President George W. Bush and Philip Zelikow, executive director of the 9/11 Commission, cautioned Americans not to believe in “ridiculous conspiracy theories.” But what did these gentlemen mean by “ridiculous conspiracy theories”? Clearly they couldn’t mean all conspiracy theories, because the U.S. government’s account of what happened on 9/11 is itself a conspriacy theory.

So they must mean ridiculous theories. But what is a ridiculous theory? Well, a good theory is one that is consistent with all known facts and not contradicted by any known facts. A poor theory is one that is consistent with some facts but contradicted by other facts. And a ridiculous theory is one that is contradicted by almost all the facts. It is with this in mind that as Americans we have a responsibility to critically examine the account of our government as to what happened on 9/11/2001 and the facts surrounding this crime.

An opportunity to do this will occur on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021 at 10 a.m. at the Greenfield Cinema, where the film “SEVEN” will be shown. The film is an examination by an organization, Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth, of the facts surrounding the collapse of Building 7 at the World Trade Center on that fateful day, Sept. 11, 2001.

It takes courage to watch this film and think about it. But our responsibilities as citizens for our government’s actions demands that we do nothing less.

After the screening of the film, the audience will be invited to discuss what they have seen. There are powerful forces in our society that don’t want us to do this. As evidence of this, I must point out that on Aug. 25 of this year The New York Times revealed that the filmmaker, Spike Lee, who has been making an HBO series on 9/11, was pressured into excluding the testimony of Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth from his film.
