My Turn: ‘Because I care deeply about Heath’

Why?! Question number one when I say I’m running for Heath Select Board. Why? Because I care deeply about Heath, about where it’s been and where it’s going.

Question number two, what are your priorities? Here are my top five.

■Secure a permanent solution for the education of our elementary age children. It has been four years since we made the difficult decision to close our school. We need this settled.

■Find a way to use our town buildings to the benefit of all the town. This has been a divisive issue. Continued delays in dealing with it have made it more so. If we are going to heal the rift and start moving forward, this has to be settled. To honor the work of the people who preceded us, to prepare for Heathans of the future we must compromise. As individuals we win a little and lose a little. As a town we all benefit.

■The most serious building issue can be found at the Highway/Fire complex. The salt shed is beyond any reasonable repair and must be replaced. The buildings housing the Highway and Fire Department are inadequate for the needs of today. These needs must be dealt with.

■We are an aging population in Heath and accessibility is a growing issue for the townspeople. We need to work on securing grant funds to improve ADA compliance.

■Financial issues are always a critical issue. Cutting the budget is not enough to improve the financial situation. Heath needs to look for ways to increase incoming funds.

Since I have been a regular attendee at Select Board meetings I’m familiar with most of the current issues. If you share the same priorities as I do, I hope you will consider voting for me on May 7.

Sue Lively is a candidate for the Heath Select Board in the annual election May 7.
