Your voice counts! Please register to vote!

I’ve helped to send tens of thousands of postcards with this message to unregistered voters across the country. In 2014, slightly over 20% of eligible voters were not registered to vote.

Apathy is the reason that many people don’t vote. But, in this election in particular, it matters, in a big way, who wins. For example, let’s look at the issue of climate change. We have not only made no progress addressing this issue over the past four years, but we’ve actually gone backwards, as countless rules and regulations related to environmental protection have been gutted. Scientific American, which has never endorsed a presidential candidate in its 175-year history, has endorsed Joe Biden. Here’s why:

“... Biden wants to spend $2 trillion on an emissions-free power sector by 2035, build energy-efficient structures and vehicles, push solar and wind power, establish research agencies to develop safe nuclear power and carbon capture technologies, and more. The investment will produce two million jobs for U.S. workers, his campaign claims, and the climate plan will be partly paid by eliminating Trump’s corporate tax cuts. Historically disadvantaged communities in the U.S. will receive 40 percent of these energy and infrastructure benefits.”

This policy is no accident. It was the result of a task force co-chaired by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and including Sunrise Movement co-founder VarshiniPrakash. Is it perfect? No, but it would certainly get us moving in the right direction. I hope that unregistered voters will register and that voters who are thinking of sitting this one out because nothing ever changes anyway will reconsider their decision. As Greta Thunberg says, “I want you to act like your house is on fire. Because it is.”
