My Turn: ‘I want to end the division in town’

I’m running for Select Board because I want to end the division in town. We need each other, and we are neighbors first. I want us to work together as a community again. And to model that for the next generations.

In the past, I’ve worked hard for the town — Chair of the Board of Health, Hall Committee, Recycling Committee, on Long Range Planning, and School Building Committee. I started Clean Sweep Day, the Farmers Market, and pushed for the Swap Shed at the dump, recycling at the Fair, improved relations with Mohawk Estates.

I’m not afraid to speak up for what I believe.

This is an important time for Heath. With the new fiber internet, young people and professionals can come live in this beautiful place, raise their children here, establish small businesses. I want to help that happen. We need young people, especially as we are growing older as a community.

I’ve lived here 39 years, coming here, like so many of us, as an idealistic newlywed. The farm families welcomed us and worked with us. I raised four kids here, taught music, ran a sheep farm, and I’ve hired a lot of local kids and know how hard it’s been for them to find jobs. My own kids and many others left Heath. Now they are starting to come back.

There’s very little room to cut our budget, and but we can increase our revenue. Our town is a jewel for those who know it, and it is our best asset — clean water, air and soil. And peace. There is a huge need for housing in Franklin County, and with internet, we can now compete.

I want to see our town advocate for all ages, and remember, as our elders knew, that without each other, we are nothing.

Karen Brooks is a candidate for a seat on the Heath Select Board in the Friday, May 7 election.
