My Turn: Homeless injustice

So I guess the latest way to deal with the homeless is to kick them out, move them along and post the property. I guess they figured that these people would just crawl under a rock and disappear.

Well let me tell you, these are human beings we are talking about. The fact that this country hasn’t done better to address this issue is horrible.

All I hear all the time is how powerful and wealthy this country is. If that’s the case, then why so much hardship and injustices? So now that you kicked those people out of their homes, what now? After disrupting their lives, you know they are just going to set up camp somewhere else. So I’m trying to see what your accomplishment was in the first place.

I live in Greenfield Gardens, so I am very familiar with the bike path. I also am friends with several homeless people who have at different points set up their camps just off the bike path by the Green River. Right around April 25, there was a sweep of the homeless camps down by the river. Not only was everyone kicked out of their tents, but the area was posted.

If you see these posted signs, disregard them, for the city does not have the right to even post them. Furthermore, they only put those signs up as far as the last encampment site. I have been going down to the river for over 30 years to fish, swim and relax. Now you’re going to tell me that just because of something you don’t like, this is all going to end for me and others?

The lack of empathy and compassion in this situation is disheartening. Furthermore, if you think homelessness is an issue now, wait about five years. This country, due to its huge wealth gap, will see the numbers skyrocket. So my suggestion would be to start coming up with better solutions, because just moving people along and disrupting their lives constantly is not a solution at all. It’s actually cruel and heartless.

So those who do the kicking out and the posting of the property: I hope you were able to sleep in a warm, comfortable bed and turn your heat up just to where you want it. I hope you had plenty of food and a nice hot shower. And as you were heading to bed that night, I bet not once did you think of your brothers and sisters that you just moved along like they were some kind of animals.

Sad times, really sad times. God bless all countries, no exceptions. Be good, do good.
