My Turn: Time for a change on the Montague Board of Health

Published: 6/9/2021 1:13:21 PM

What can I bring to the Board of Health in Montague? Thirty-five years of experience working in our local communities, and an understanding of the strengths and limitations of our community services and our healthcare system.

As a nurse, I have experience in resource utilization, education, community resources, public health, community nursing, advocacy, legislative awareness, along with understanding the human condition. The pandemic showed a need for strong public health.

Numerous Montague residents, have told me that when they were isolated or quarantined they did not have contact with anyone local. They did receive updates, were not able to talk to someone who understood their needs, or what is available here. Some left isolation, knowing that they shouldn’t, to get groceries or medications.

People continued to work when they shouldn’t because they felt they couldn’t take time off. Others were not contacted even after learning that they were in close contact with someone who was positive. This lack of local involvement with our citizens led to misinformation, potential further infections, and limited active resources to our Montague citizens.

The decision to utilize the state recommended Community Tracing Collaborative had advantages initially, it did not uphold the promises that were given. Now is the time to review what went wrong and how to plan for the next public health crisis. Other priorities include: Reviewing problems that came up during pandemic, revising plans for public health emergencies, reviewing priorities for Montague continued reopening, finding public health funding sources, determining the priorities for the department; determining priorities for the additional hours of the public health nurse.

I hope you feel that it is time for a change on the Montague Board of Health.

Montague Town Election is June 22. I would appreciate your vote.
