DiZoglio for state auditor

State Sen. Diana DiZoglio is our choice for state auditor. DiZoglio is a bold and fearless legislator who has an iron I-beam for a backbone.

In the Senate, she has been a leader in the effort to bring more transparent and accountable government to that body by pushing for reforms to allow legislators at least 24 hours to read bills before voting on them and to make committee votes public. She also has been a strong proponent of making the open meeting and public records laws apply to the legislative, executive and judicial branches. Massachusetts is one of just 11 states whose public meeting laws expressly exclude its state Legislature.

Senator DiZoglio is also deeply committed to using the auditor’s office to implement changes to the Payment In-Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) program for communities that host state-owned land. Here in the hilltowns and across rural Massachusetts, thousands of acres of state forests, parks and wildlife management areas are tax exempt, yet the state has not fully funded PILOT for decades. This is a critical form of local aid for small towns with thin tax bases.

DiZoglio has made PILOT reform a cornerstone of her Social Justice and Equity Audit Plan and unlike the other two candidates in the race, has spent time on the ground in western Massachusetts to speak about how high a priority this will be for her as the commonwealth’s chief accountability officer.

She has pledged that as auditor, her “staff will conduct spot-checks of PILOT payments to provide ongoing updates and information, and to ensure the legislature has the most up-to-date information to address this issue of regional equity.”

The role of state auditor is to conduct oversight and review of every agency and program in state government to make sure fiscal and operational goals and metrics are being met. Diana DiZoglio has a 10-year record as a champion of open and accessible government and a tireless advocate for small towns and rural communities.

We enthusiastically support her candidacy and ask you to join with us in voting for her on Sept. 6.
