No on Question 1

It disturbs my sense of fair play that City Councilors are recommending to voters in Greenfield how many signatures it will take to overturn a vote of the City Council. That decision should be entirely up to us — the people who elected them. If you vote Yes on Question 1, you are accepting their signature number — around 909 signatures in just 23 days. I feel like I’m being led around on a shorter and shorter leash.

To me, it’s such a clear conflict of interest for councilors to make it harder for voters to challenge a vote of the councilors. If we are to be trusted to elect councilors, the councilors should trust us enough to know when to challenge a vote — and how hard to make that process.

Councilors never have to gather referendum signatures. Thirteen councilors are asking us to do all the heavy lifting. They want us to support their decisions — but don’t want to hear from us when we’re unhappy. I’d say the voters are getting the short-end of the stick — and getting stuck paying the bill. No on 1 is the only fair vote.

If you want your voice heard, join me and vote No on Question 1 on Nov. 2.
