Children need a chance

Back in the ’70s, ’80s, ‘90’s I taught “special needs kids.”

I worked with hundreds and performed for far more. I did residencies teaching my crafts and using lots of improvisation. I created shows with them that they performed for the “main stream” students and faculty.

One time at a Greenfield school a mother (of a Down syndrome lad) came up to me and asked, “What are you teaching my son, he is much more communicative and demonstrative?”

Children need a chance. All children aren’t reared the same way or in the same environment. Many have had to cope on their own. They don’t know if they can learn or how they would. Their world is heavy.

Our educational system needs to be upgraded to facilitate health in thinking and practice and mind opening education designed for each child. Have teacher teams for classrooms. Classrooms should be indoors and outdoors. Each child deserves a chance. All the money wasted on things far less important or pertinent. You can’t spend enough.

The playing field needs to be leveled.
