Make buying produce a SNAP

Help the farmers markets

I am a frequent customer at the Greenfield Farmers Market. It is part of my weekly routine, and I am always excited when the market opens for the season.

I don’t know when, but a good many years ago, I noticed that the market manager was processing sales through what she called an EBT machine. I asked her about it, and she said it was for shoppers who were using SNAP benefits or food stamps. She said that the introduction of the machines at the market had increased access for people who were living on fixed incomes and who were food insecure.

So I was surprised to hear legislative candidate for the first Franklin House seat Natalie Blais’s recent statement that the company that processes all of these payments has told the government that it will cease offering this service. This action, if it happens, will have a major negative effect on my market.

Blais is right to urge Gov. Baker to step in and help all farmers markets in the state. Not only is she going to be a strong advocate for farmers, but also for my fellow customers at farmers markets who need assistance.
