It's indeed about relationship

Thank you for “Positive relationship with local forests.. .” [My Turn, Aug. 31] and for your levelheadedness. I’ll push back strong and hard against your alluded use of poison as somehow on overall positive, but I so welcome your recognition of forests as being more than board feet or hunt-able animal habitat.

Take the vilest of bad actors from the world stage, your pick. If you could somehow transport them into deep woods even they would be moved, maybe even for a brief moment to acknowledging something sacred within and about.

They’d deny it of course, and return soon enough to being the way they are, but mature forests have an unquantifiable power that goes well beyond carbon sequestration or biodiversity, important as these indeed are. Call it life if you will, and I believe that we have the critical task of recognizing and honoring and protecting.

Harvard Forest says leave 10 percent alone. Public land represents 13 percent of Massachusetts forest. Pretty simple math. Let’s do it.
