Vote for Courtney Ann Hoyt

To my fellow Hawley residents: On Monday, June 17, the town will vote to fill a vacancy on our Selectboard. I will proudly be voting for Courtney Ann Hoyt.

I am supporting Courtney even though, as many of you remember, she ran against me for Selectman in 2016. In that race, I felt I was the best candidate for the job. I won, but she gave me a good run for it.

Though she was my opponent, I never doubted for a moment that Courtney had Hawley’s best interests at heart and was completely dedicated to our community. Courtney cares about Hawley. Her service on the Fire Department and School Committee prove it. While many young people have left, she has chosen to raise a family here and to become involved with the town.

She has run for Selectboard twice. Despite facing setbacks — one handed down by me — and a lot of adversity, she has never quit on us. That speaks volumes. Over the last few years, I have watched her learn and grow a great deal. I think her understanding of the issues and complexities of local governance has improved tremendously.

More than anything else, I think Courtney is a fair-minded individual. I haven’t always agreed with her, but I respect that she listens to all sides of an issue and uses logic and evidence to make decisions based on what she genuinely believes is in the town’s best interests. She puts that ahead of political loyalties and personal agendas. It is for this reason that I am encouraging you to join me in supporting her, and why I hope I will be able to work with her on the Selectboard over the next few years. Let’s give her a shot. It’s about time.
