Cost for ambulance

In a recent Recorder article about a town contract with American Medical Response ambulance, the article stated, “although there are some private ambulance services that charge municipalities with fees, AMR is offering its services for the town for free.” Greenfield Mayor responds, “I’m happy to work with AMR to provide the city with a professional medical response and deployment plan for all residents.… of course, having this municipal agreement at no cost for the city is very beneficial.”

I definitely do not see how this agreement benefited my family here in Greenfield. AMR ambulance transported my 92-year-old mother two miles from our house to Baystate Hospital recently. She was billed $1,000 by AMR ambulance. I promptly called AMR to discuss and negotiate the bill, but they had no interest in discussion. My mother’s insurance paid $400 for transport (a top amount, they said) for ambulance transport. AMR swiftly sent the $600 remaining balance to a collection agency. I can not see how AMR ambulance transport benefits sick people when they are extorting outrageous fees from the sick and elderly. Please consider a different alternative before calling AMR emergency transport.
