COVID-19 and Swine Flu data

Ruby Rogers’ letter (“Biden and COVID 19,” Aug. 4) is very misleading. It cites figures from Fox News that the death toll from the swine flu in 2008-09 was “100,000-575,000.” These figures are world-wide totals for that virus.

The U.S. death toll from the swine flu was 12,496 (https://bit.ly/2DiNIkc). While the Obama administration may have made some mistakes in its response to that virus, it followed medical and scientific advice, kept the toll of the virus relatively low and minimized the disruption.

The Trump administration dismantled all the governmental structures put in place by the Bush and Obama administrations to prepare and respond to future pandemics and bungled the response. The U.S. COVID-19 death toll is now 12 times that of the swine flu and still rising. It is time to make a change.
