Please support the Greenfield Recorder's COVID-19 coverage

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the local economy — and many of the advertisers who support our work — to a near standstill. During this unprecedented challenge, we continue to make our coronavirus coverage free to everyone at recorder.com because we feel our most critical mission is to deliver vital information to our communities. If you believe local news is essential, especially during this crisis, please donate.

Thank you for your support of the Recorder.

A round of applause to the Career Center staff

Every Career Center across the state has been closed to the public due to the pandemic but essential staff continue to assist customers with their unemployment benefits.

The MassHire Career Center based in Greenfield (that is still sometimes referred to as the unemployment office) has been receiving at least 100 calls a day from people who have no access to a computer and who have difficulties navigating the 800 call-in number. With numerous calls, every customer is treated with respect and compassion.

Customers filing for unemployment insurance have understandably been frustrated and very upset and sometimes irate, but once their claim has been processed by the two unemployment insurance specialists, they are grateful. As a relatively recently retiree of the Regional Employment Board where I worked for 44 years and housed within the Career Center, I can attest to the dedication of the staff. Career Centers across the country are funded through the Department of Labor’s Employment & Training Administration as well as with discretionary funds of which Massachusetts is one of three states who have received funding for job training programs.

I encourage job seekers and as well as employers to access the many services available at no cost by checking the website https://www.masshirefhcareers.org. Thank you to the staff of both the Workforce Board and Career Center for your continuous service to the public.
