Remembering Walt

Daniel Brown’s My Turn piece “Honoring a Colrain veteran” made me think of Mr. Schneider and how he scolded me years ago for not having my Cub Scout shirt tail tucked in properly. As a 10-year-old, he was a stern imposing man of 6 feet or better, the kind of man you did not want to talk back to.

I later learned of Walter’s wartime experiences with the 100th Bomber Division and realized how deeply he cared about freedom and respect for this country. My sloppy shirt tail was unacceptable to his hard-earned value system. His stern directive to me was an expression of love and respect to the cruel sacrifices he experience firsthand.

Thanks Walt. You will always be remembered and appreciated.
