Which side are you on?

A recent court decision found that racism operates in the Greenfield Police Department. Mayor RoxannWedegartner's response demonstrates that she neither listens to a diverse constituency nor collaborates with town officials and employees. First, she said she will consider appealing the verdict (with taxpayers' money). She doesn't seem to grasp that racism is pervasive in all American institutions. No matter how well-intentioned European Americans may be, change will never occur without that basic recognition. The court decision is an invitation, a mandate, to scrutinize policy and make repair. Let the judgment be an opportunity for change, not to hunker down with blinders secured. Secondly, alleging that he lied under oath, Wedegartner put on leave the white police officer who testified in support of the Black officer who brought the case. And she confined him to his home during working hours! Is she the judge, prosecutor and jury? I take heart in the number of citizens who joined in a witness outside Town Hall as well as in the council members who are speaking out. In the Civil Rights Movement of the 60s a favorite freedom song was “Which Side Are You On?” Mayor Wedegartner, which side are you on?
