Thank you, John Howard, FirstLight Power vice president of operations for your recent substantive column regarding Northfield Mountain operations and the Connecticut River [“Setting the record straight on flows and fish passage commitments,” Recorder, May 31]. It seems the only editorials we read for a while were the misinformed rantings of critics whose only goal seems to be to shut Northfield Mountain down. Albeit not a perfect solution, you provide much needed energy to the region. As someone who’s spent a good amount of time on the river and has over the past 40-plus years, it is far from dead.

Also, as a resident of Erving, I say thank you to Firstlight for the property taxes they pay that enabled Erving to have a beautiful Senior Center, a fantastic library, a modern, well-equipped Fire Department, an awesome Highway Department and a great elementary school. I’m sure you will do what’s right for the river and surrounding communities when your license is renewed.
