After attending the Greenfield City Council meeting on April 20, when people were talking about the 42 homeowners who are having their property potentially “taken” for back taxes, I was greatly disheartened over the possibility of losing my community over this issue.
Over the past two years of COVID, all of us have been greatly affected: our community, our families, and sometimes our lives. My fear is that these homes will be sold to the lowest bidder, and families will lose all their equity in the home.
We must find a better way to keep our community members in their homes. I don’t understand how a town can try to collect more than they are owed? There is a major shortage of housing in Greenfield. Where are these people going to go? Where’s the morality in taking away someone’s life investment? There’s a bill in the state Legislature, H 3053, that would end this practice of “home equity theft.” Call 617-722-2000 and ask for Senator Comerford and Representative Mark by name.
I like my community the way it is. I am not in favor of gentrification. These homeowners are worth keeping in our community. This is the heart of the matter to me,
