If President Biden would like to win reelection, there is one thing that will bring his poll numbers up, win him another term, and avoid turning our nation over to the autocrat, Donald J. Trump: Recognize Palestine as a state.

To date, 139 U.N. member countries have recognized the state of Palestine within the borders of June 4, 1967, and Spain is considering voting to recognize them, too. Yet, despite claims he believes in a two-state solution, Biden not only has refused to recognize Palestinian statehood, but his administration even refused to recognize Palestine’s status as a state under occupation.

No wonder Hamas concluded that the only thing Israel and the world understands is force. Oct. 7 is the result.

If Biden truly wants peace in the Middle East, now is the time: Recognize Palestine as a member state in the United Nations.

I have written a book on the subject, “Palestine: Waiting by Lazarus’ Tomb.” (2010) At the time I was a member of FFIPP, Faculty for Israeli and Palestinian Peace, and attended peace conferences in East Jerusalem, Palestine, Brussels, and New York City. As a journalist, I was also invited by a representative of the U.N. to attend their conference on Palestine on Sept. 24, 2004.
