What with global warming, it seems unlikely that hell will freeze over anytime soon. But the Department of Public Utilities (DPU) order last week that Massachusetts move away from fossil gas makes one wonder! [“State to curtail natural gas expansion,” Recorder, Dec. 9].

This is a long-needed change, and reflects Gov. Maura Healey’s welcome influence over the agency. The order not only makes Massachusetts more likely to meet its climate targets, but may serve as a model for other states. We hope that currently proposed new gas pipelines, such as the pipeline in Springfield and Enbridge’s “Project Maple” expansion through the Northeast, will now be halted. Kudos to Gov. Healey and the new DPU commissioners. Perhaps pigs are flying.
