State money should fund higher ed

I read in the Boston Globe this morning Massachusetts has so much money on hand — an “unheard of amount,” according to the governor — that there’s talk of “tax relief” or tax breaks among the Boston bros. (With state coffers overflowing, Senate leader joins Baker in calling for tax relief package - The Boston Globe).

Meanwhile, in this very left-leaning state, UMASS has announced a tuition increase for next year. Why? If we claim to want cheaper or free college education why don’t we have it? Why do we feel we can’t have it (or hey, pay off those student loans) unless the federal government does it for us?

We can. We just don’t. That’s the answer (www.bostonglobe.com/2022/05/04/metro/with-state-coffers-overflowing-senate-leader-joins-baker-calling-tax-relief-package/).
