Be kind while language gets sorted out

Last Saturday’s My Turn raised questions worthy of consideration [“Is heaven a heirarchy ruled by a white guy?” Recorder, March 25]. Two things came up for me. First, the Adam and Eve story is actually the second creation story in Genesis. In the first, after everything else needed for us to exist “male and female created He them.” Second, as to the gendering of language we are currently fumbling our way to better choices. It is true that some languages only have one third person singular pronoun, period, which doesn’t mean there are not gendered roles. But for me, referring to the Creative Source, or God, I long for a “genderful,” warm and living third person singular since “it” to me seems cold or indifferent, at best, to living vs. non-living. May we all remember to be kind to each other as our language as we use it every day, gets straightened out.
