Huge thanks to the Deerfield DPW and Pelican Products for making Earth Day 2022 very gratifying here in South Deerfield. Pelican Products donated 14 large trees — grown at Franklin County Tech School — to the town. An enthusiastic crew of Pelican employees arrived on Earth Day, shovels in hand, to put tulip trees and lindens in the ground on town-owned land. E. J., the second-grade son of a Pelican staff member, was very excited to be part of this hopeful event. In addition to members of the Deerfield Energy Committee, Tim Hilchey and Pat Ryan assisted with welcoming these gifts to their new home. Students will participate in tree planting at Frontier and at the Deerfield Elementary School to honor Arbor Day. The flowers of dogwood, cherry, and crabtrees will beautify the school grounds. Though we may sometimes feel that it is difficult to have an impact on climate issues, planting trees has so many benefits. Shade, beauty, fruits, floodwater absorption, Carbon sequestration, oxygen, inspiration! It is a pleasure to work with our DPW. We can look forward to watching these trees blossom, leaf out, and gain stature for many years to come.
