Stay silent?

The leaders of our country are citing the Bible to justify ripping children away from their families and putting them in cages. Parents do not know if they will ever see their children again. Children only know that they are caged like animals with other scared, bewildered and terrified children. They have been accused by the attorney general of being criminals though there has been no trial. He just knows that they are criminals.

Is this who we are as a country? Is this what the Jesus of their Bible would do? If we are the democracy we like to think we are, then we can do a great deal more, and indeed must do everything we can. The power and legitimacy of the government rests with the people, and if they are breaking the law (which they are doing) and behaving unethically and immorally, then it is up to us to act to stop them.

That means contacting members of Congress, our own and others, especially the Republicans who are going along with whatever President Trump does, no matter how awful. It means gathering with others in protest and standing up for what is decent and moral. It means not accepting as normal the abhorrent behavior of the current administration. It is not normal. It is a horror show that seems to bring a new set of horrors every day and does so in our name. Is this what makes American great?
