HATFIELD — A tractor-trailer traveling north on Interstate 91 caught fire Thursday evening, closing a section of the highway just past Exit 22 for nearly three hours.

The call came in to police at 6:25 p.m., and Hatfield firefighters were dispatched. The truck driver detached the burning trailer from the truck, which was not affected, and drove north of where the trailer was pulled to the side of the road.

Flames were coming from the rear and roof of the trailer, which appeared to be empty. Three Hatfield fire trucks were on scene at 6:40 p.m. along with at least two police vehicles and a fire department vehicle. At least five firefighters battled the blaze, eventually putting out the flames and spraying the interior of the trailer with hoses.

When the flames and smoke cleared, large holes were visible on three sides of the trailer.

Traffic was detoured on Route 5 through North Hatfield as police blocked off the highway near the truck.

State Police said the fire had been extinguished and no injuries were reported as of 7:45 p.m. I-91 north reopened to traffic around 9:15 after police had recovered the burned trailer.
