SUNDERLAND — Voters of the 1st Franklin District have an opportunity to meet their next possible state representative.

The Sunderland Democratic Town Committee is hosting a “Meet and Greet” for all the announced candidates in a crowded race for the seat being vacated by Steve Kulik.

The event is 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Sunderland Safety Complex, 105 River Road (Route 47 South).

All eight candidates have confirmed they will attend: Christine Doktor of Cummington, Natalie Blais of Sunderland, Casey Pease of Worthington, Kate Albright-Hanna of Huntington, Francia Wisnewski of Montague; Jonathan Edwards of Whately, Nathaniel Waring of Sunderland and Andrew Baker of Shelburne.

Each will have an opportunity to speak briefly to the audience. A question-and-answer period will follow.

“Democrats and interested independent voters of the 1st Franklin District are invited to come hear from this very qualified group of people who have stepped up to run for the state House of Representatives,” according to a statement from the committee.

The 1st Franklin District includes Ashfield, Buckland, Conway, Deerfield, Leverett, Montague, Shelburne, Shutesbury, Sunderland and Whately.

There had been nine candidates for the seat, but Elizabeth Swihart of Turners Falls recently left the race, citing the challenge of trying to run a campaign while also being the mother of two young children.
