NORTHFIELD — Redemption Christian Academy’s graduating class is small enough that each student was announced by name and home country at the school’s last commencement ceremony Monday afternoon.

Of the 19 students, only two are from the United States. The rest were from Canada, South America, Australia, Africa, and eastern and western Europe.

This will be Redemption Christian Academy’s last year in Northfield. The school announced this spring that it is closing its Northfield campus and consolidating to its campus in Troy, N.Y.

Founded in 1979 in Troy by Pastor John Massey Jr., Redemption Christian Academy (RCA) provides education in a structured Christian environment. The Northfield campus, which enrolled about 80 students from preschool through high school post-graduate, opened in 2013. It is one of four remaining historically black boarding schools, according to its website.

At Monday’s commencement, School Activities Program Director Marquita Wilchcombe took a moment to thank a long list of local friends and neighbors who had supported the school.

“You became part of our family. We know it was from the depth of your hearts,” Wilchcombe said. “We’re going to miss you guys, but our spirits are connected.”

The commencement speaker was Kristyna Losova, a 2016 graduate of the Northfield campus.

“It was never just a school. It was a family,” Losova said. “It was those people who believed in me when no one else did.”

After graduating from RCA, Losova earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Grand Canyon University in Arizona, where she is now working on a master’s degree in business.

Her advice to the graduating class: “You are the only one standing between your current situation and your dream.”
