SHELBURNE FALLS — A handmade gift shop run by the local artists and sisters Cara Leach and Kay Cafasso is set to open Saturday, joining a vibrant collection of independent stores lining the village streets.

Leach and Cafasso are holding the event from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at their shop, The Light Within Shelburne Falls, located at 8 Deerfield Ave. All are welcome to share in the festivities (and complimentary appetizers).

The shop, which doubles as the sisters’ studio, will sell a variety of handmade items: lanterns, bags, notebooks, mirrors, purses, pocketbooks and more. Its name, The Light Within Shelburne Falls, is a nod to its products as well as the town, Leach said.

“We are tapping into the concept of light as a lantern or a candle, but also the light of the heart within Shelburne Falls,” Leach said.

The sisters, who live across the street from one another in Shelburne Falls, specialize in different, yet equally unique, kinds of art.

Leach focuses on making prints using linoleum carvings. Her artistry changed a year ago when she learned about a new technology: a sublimation press. The device, using heat and pressure, changes digital prints to gas, allowing ink to penetrate three-dimensional objects like ceramics.

“It just piqued my interest and got me really fired up about trying to think about other ways that I could use my art,” Leach said.

Meanwhile, Cafasso is most interested in plants and gardens, running a permaculture class in town. She also makes handmade lanterns at a community studio in town, and will sell her creations at the shop.

In time, Leach plans to “bring in other local artists” to the shop, she said.

The shop will be open one day a week: Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Leach said she may open an extra day this season, but this is yet to be determined.
