BERNARDSTON — Held on the third Tuesday of August, this year’s Bernardston Kiwanis Club’s annual Summer Senior Dinner will be delivered to local senior households due to the health concerns for a public gathering.

Kiwanis Club Member Dan Devine said they wanted to keep the meal going despite being unable to hold it as a public event at Kiwanis Park, as is traditional, because the park remains closed to the public for the year. This time, all the meals will be delivered to senior households, or picked up at the United Church of Bernardston.

“You can’t do this, you can’t do that,” Devine said. “We’ve been doing this for years and we didn’t want people to miss it.”

Devine said the United Church of Bernardston had “once again stepped up” and allowed the club to use its facilities to prepare and distribute the meals. The church and Kiwanis Club have partnered to host multiple drive-thru meal services throughout the lasting COVID-19 health emergency.

The annual Summer Senior Meal will consist of baked ham, baked beans, coleslaw and a dinner roll. Orders for meals must be placed by Monday, Aug. 17, at noon. Seniors can call Kiwanis Club member Joel Cole 413-834-5484, the United Church of Bernardston at 413-648-9306 or the Senior Center at 413-648-5413 to place an order.

“It’s just a good summer time meal,” Devine said.

The Kiwanis Club has also made chicken pot pies which will be available during the Saturday farmers markets at the United Church of Bernardston.
