GREENFIELD — The YMCA pool and hot tub have re-opened, according to the nonprofit’s CEO.

Grady Vigneau said the problem with the several-year-old air-exchange system was assessed and a temporary fix was completed until the parts arrive and the permanent fix is done.

“We’re having a custom-built air-exchange unit constructed,” Vigneau said. “That should be finished by later this winter.”

Vigneau said until then, he has been told the current system will work and is safe. He said the air-exchange system feeds fresh air into the pool area.

He said he, the YMCA board, and its aquatics and operations directors worked with engineers and the city’s building inspector and Fire Department on the issue. He said they will continue to work with them until the work is complete.

“The health, safety and care of our members is always at the top of our minds,” Vigneau said. “We closed the pool because we decided to err on the side of caution.”

Vigneau said engineers visited the site shortly after the pool area was closed to assess the situation.

“We’re doing this right, whatever time it takes,” he said. “We apologize for any inconvenience there was to our members.”

Vigneau said he will keep members informed as the YMCA moves forward.
