GREENFIELD — The Greenfield YMCA is offering a free week’s membership for local seniors until Saturday.

Anyone age 55 or older is invited to visit the Y and participate in land- and water-based fitness classes, use the pool and gym equipment and take a dip in the Jacuzzi, free of charge.

The Y and Baystate Franklin Medical Center will also offer a Senior Health Fair and Functional Fitness Assessment for people age 60 and older on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

YMCA exercise trainers will assess them on upper and lower body strength, flexibility and aerobic endurance and balance, and they’ll receive a score compared to the national average. Trainers will discuss how scores can be improved with seniors.

At noon, local physician Dr. Marguerite Gump will speak about pain management during a luncheon.

“As our local population ages and more and more people, especially seniors, realize feeling ‘old’ is more a result of lack of exercise rather than actual birthdays, they are joining the Y to maintain or improve their strength and endurance so they can live independently for as long as possible,” said Executive Director Bob Sunderland. “The number of Y members over age 55 has increased every year for the past decade.”

Jayne Trosin, the Y’s fitness and social responsibility director, said in a press release that the Y has developed progressive exercise programs in its pool, the Fit Life center and group exercise classes to cover a full range of fitness activities.

“In our group exercise programs, for example, people can move from Chair Fitness to Enhance Fitness to Group Active and beyond,” Trosin said.

Seniors who want to join the Y can take advantage of a sliding fee scale with three levels of senior discount. Some could become members for $12 per month, with unlimited access.
