GREENFIELD — Baystate Franklin Medical Center has resumed orthopedic surgeries after nearly a year, thanks to the addition of board-certified orthopedic surgeon Dr. Colin S. Cooper to its medical staff.

Cooper has joined Baystate Franklin as part of New England Orthopedic Surgeons’ (NEOS) expansion into the Northern Region, according to a Baystate Health press release. The scope of his practice includes arthroscopic surgery of the knee, shoulder and hip, as well as shoulder arthroplasty and fracture care.

A native of Ohio, Cooper graduated from Northeast Ohio Medical University, and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., the release states. Post residency, Cooper completed advanced training in orthopedic surgery with fellowships in orthopedic trauma at the University of Kentucky and in sports medicine at Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center.

“Musculoskeletal pain can be debilitating and prevent patients from doing the activities they enjoy or that are required for their occupation,” Cooper explained in the release. “I look forward to offering my patients both nonsurgical and surgical treatment options to reduce their pain and get them back as quickly and safely as possible.”

Cooper, who knew he wanted to be a doctor from a young age, said he chose orthopedics because, “you can take someone who’s injured and in pain and often find a solution to return them to function.”

Cooper not only works with his patients, but with their families and caregivers as well, because he said a patient’s support system can be crucial for successful outcomes.

“What I enjoy most about my practice is when I see someone return to their activities after having a setback,” he said in the release.

Cooper works with an entire team, including other doctors, physician assistants, physical therapists and nurses, the release states. Most surgical patients will leave the same day as surgery, while some may spend one night at Baystate Franklin.

Cooper said he chose Baystate Franklin because he had a great experience working within the Baystate Health system in Springfield, and he has worked with staff from the Northern Region and was impressed.

“Baystate Franklin has a great reputation, and I know there is certainly a need for orthopedic care and sports medicine here,” he said in the release. “We have a very experienced team and I’m eager to work with them.”

Cooper is currently doing surgeries at the new Baystate Franklin Medical Center Surgical Center and is seeing patients in his office at New England Orthopedic Surgeons in the Baystate Health & Wellness Center at 325B King St. in Northampton. Appointments can be made through NEOS by calling 413-785-4666.
