With Greenfield RMV reopening, spokesperson talks available services

GREENFIELD — State officials say the Registry of Motor Vehicles in Greenfield was “strategically and thoughtfully” reopened to the public on Oct. 13, with social distancing protocols and procedures that include offering designated hours on Wednesdays this month to customers 75 years old and older.

RMV spokesperson Judith Reardon Riley said an older customer whose driver’s license or ID card expires in October and who is required to conduct in-person transactions — including customers whose licenses/IDs were extended from March, April, May and June — will be able to make an appointment on Wednesdays.

“This new service option for seniors is being offered at select service center locations, including Greenfield, to provide eligible customers with flexibility in scheduling their appointments while helping to reduce anxiety and angst that they may have regarding an in-person visit at this time,” Riley said.

The local RMV at 18 Miner St. mirrors other statewide registries currently open, she added, and has continued to implement safety measures that adhere to the recommendations and requirements that have been issued to date for the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Greenfield location is open by appointment only weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., currently processing required in-person RMV business transactions and commercial drop-off registrations. It will begin offering road tests again on Tuesday.

While residents have complained they’ve had a difficult time scheduling an appointment, Riley said the reservation calendar online shows dates that are available for booking, dates that are full and dates that are not yet available for booking.

“If there are no appointments available, (people should) check back later as appointments may open up during business hours,” she said.

Riley said all RMV service centers, including Greenfield, have a process for customers who need to return to the RMV for any reason — if they are missing something when they arrive for their initial appointment, for instance — and will allow the customer to return without having to make another appointment. She said when appointments are made online, information pertaining to what they will need is provided, so people should pay close attention.

No attendants

She said the RMV in Greenfield currently has two counters serving customers throughout the day. To enforce social distancing, customers who make a reservation are the only ones allowed in the center. Family members and friends must wait outside.

“The only exception is for learner’s permit applicants who are allowed a parent or guardian to accompany them,” she said. “Customers who do not have immediate needs for necessary and required in-person transactions should delay their visits and not visit a center without an appointment.”

She said the local RMV, like others across the state, will continue to implement protocols and procedures to prioritize reducing customer volumes and maintaining proper social distancing, including requiring appointments for in-person transactions, dedicating hours for seniors and introducing non-commercial title and registration drop-off services.

Riley said the Greenfield RMV has also made temporary service changes for commercial transactions. Commercial drop-off services are available Monday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Wednesday from 1 to 4 p.m.
