WEST SPRINGFIELD — A Greenfield man faces charges for allegedly stealing items — including seven chain saws and a kitchen sink — from two people in West Springfield around dawn on Thursday.

Michael J. Blaine, 35, of High Street, appeared in Springfield District Court later in the day and pleaded not guilty to one count of attempting to commit a crime, two counts of breaking and entering with intent to commit a misdemeanor, and two counts of larceny under $1,200.

According to the West Springfield Police Department, officers responded to the area of City View Avenue and Gay Terrace at roughly 5 a.m. on Thursday for a report of a male breaking into a shed. Officers then learned the suspect had fled on foot. The person who called police then reported several tools had been removed from the bed of his truck. The kitchen sink was taken from the shed.

Police then located a second victim, who identified a speaker and amplifier located next to a vehicle that was determined to belong to Blaine. According to police, officers located Blaine hiding underneath a nearby vehicle and took him into custody.

At the time of arrest, Blaine was found to be wearing the backpack belonging to the second victim. Police reportedly found seven chain saws, power tools and other items, including a kitchen sink, inside Blaine’s vehicle. Officers took these items as evidence.
