July 13: Historical Society potluck

COLRAIN — The Colrain Historical Society’s annual potluck will be held Thursday, July 13, at 6 p.m. behind the Pitt House at 8 Main Road.

After a brief business meeting, the Historical Society will host a show-and-tell of never-before-seen items from its collection, including a lace and tulle wedding dress worn by a Colrain bride in 1909.

Attendees are invited to bring a main course, salad or dessert to share, along with a place setting. Iced tea will be available or people can bring their own drinks.

Historical Society hosting open house

BUCKLAND — The Buckland Historical Society will host an open house on Sunday, July 23, from 2 to 4 p.m.

The Wilder Homestead at 129 Ashfield Road (Route 112) and the Buckland Historical Society Museum at 20 Upper St. will be open to visitors.

The furnished 1775 saltbox home with five fireplaces and the 1820s shoemaking shop will be open for tours. The English barn will be under construction, but people can see the project’s progress.

The museum, located in a former schoolhouse in the Greek Revival style, will showcase “The Caged Man of Buckland: The Life of Josiah Spaulding,” a new exhibit.

SHELBURNE — The town will hold a virtual public hearing on Monday, July 17, at 6 p.m. to gather public comment on the outcomes of Shelburne’s fiscal year 2021 Community Development Block Grant. Projects supported by the grant are Bridge Street upgrades and the West County Emergency Food Pantry.

Those who cannot attend the hearing may also submit written comments in advance to Town Administrator Terry Narkewicz at townadmin@townofshelburnema.gov or 51 Bridge St., Shelburne Falls, MA 01370.

‘Fascinating Rhythm’ concert set for July 29

CHARLEMONT — Soprano Tinky Weisblat and composer/pianist Jerry Noble will present “Fascinating Rhythm,” a historical concert, on Saturday, July 29, at 5 p.m. at the Charlemont Federated Church at 175 Main St. (Route 2).

The program will revisit music that was popular more than a century ago, between the 1840s and the 1920s, while also celebrating a few 1920s babies who died recently: Burt Bacharach, Harry Belafonte and Sheldon Harnick.

Weisblat will place the songs in historical context as she introduces them. Molly Scott will perform a couple songs as well. Donations at the door will benefit Mohawk Trail Concerts.

Colrain tax bills are now quarterly

COLRAIN — Treasurer/Collector Paula Harrison advises that the town has transitioned to quarterly tax billing.

Residents will receive one mailing that has two preliminary bills, one due Aug. 1 and the other due Nov. 2. In late December, residents will receive one mailing with two real bills due Feb. 1, 2024 and May 2, 2024. Taxpayers should mail in the proper stub with their payments.
