Shelburne Falls student earns high honors

SHELBURNE FALLS — Diana Yaseen, a Shelburne Falls resident in her sophomore year at the Williston Northampton School, achieved high honors for the first trimester of the 2020 to 2021 academic year. Students earning high honors are required to earn a grade point average of 92.

Shelburne Falls native makes Dean’s List

SHELBURNE FALLS — Nellie Boyd-Owens, daughter of Rebekah L. Boyd and Patrick D. Owens Jr. of Shelburne Falls, had been named to the Dean’s List at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., for the fall semester.

To earn a place on the Dean’s List, a student must earn a minimum grade point average of 3.625 on a 4.0 scale.

Fire District gets $5K for PPE, disinfecting supplies

SHELBURNE FALLS — The Shelburne Falls Fire District is among 15 Massachusetts departments to receive grants through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA’s) Assistance to Firefighters Grant COVID-19 Supplemental Program that will support the purchase of personal protective equipment and related disinfecting supplies.

According to a FEMA press release, a total of $3.9 million was awarded to 288 volunteer and combination fire departments nationwide. The Shelburne Falls Fire District received $5,091. Also locally, the Phillipston Fire Department received $2,642.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant COVID-19 Supplemental Program is authorized and funded through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, the release states. To learn more about the grant program, visit fema.gov/firegrants.

Nomination papers available starting Thursday

SHELBURNE — Nomination papers for the May 17 annual town election are available starting Thursday through March 29. The forms must be returned to Town Clerk Joe Judd by 5 p.m. on April 1.

According to a notice from Judd, the following positions will be on the ballot:

■One Selectboard seat with a three-year term

■Assessor, three-year term

■Town clerk, one-year term

■Moderator, one-year term

■Tree warden, one-year term

■Constable, three-year term

■Two Shelburne Free Public Library trustees, both with three-year terms

■Recreation Committee member, five-year term

■Housing Authority member, one-year term

■Planning Board member, five-year term

Those who are interested in running for one of these positions can make arrangements to receive nomination papers by contacting the Town Clerk’s Office at 413-625-0300, ext. 3 or townclerk@townofshelburnema.gov.

While the election is currently scheduled for May 17, Judd warns the date is subject to change depending on the public health situation. The last day for Shelburne residents to register to vote in the election is May 10.
