WENDELL — Organizations, schools and individuals have until Oct. 15 to apply for grants covering a wide range of cultural activities.

The Wendell Cultural Council has $4,500 it will award as part of its annual grant program. In the past the grants have funded programs at the Wendell Free Library, Town Hall, senior center and schools.

“These grants can support a variety of artistic projects and activities in the Wendell community, including exhibits, festivals, field trips, short-term artist residencies, or performances in schools, workshops and lectures,” Wendell Cultural Council Co-Chairwoman Gillian Budine said in a statement.

According to Budine, three types of applications will be given priority over others: applications from local artists and community members, applications for programs that take place in Wendell or have Wendell resident participants and applications that “contribute to our goals of funding programs that benefit diverse age, gender, race, and ethnicity populations in a wide variety of disciplines.”

Applications will be further evaluated based on the applicant’s financial need, as well as demonstrated planning for a program, “especially in regard to individuals contacting probable local venues prior to submitting the application and gaining their support,” like schools and libraries.

Successful applicants have won grants for adult art lessons, a marionette performance, classical music concerts, poetry readings and field trips to the University of Massachusetts’ Fine Arts Theater.

The Wendell Cultural Council is part of Local Cultural Councils, a network of 329 councils serving all 351 Massachusetts municipalities. The state legislature provides annual funds to the Massachusetts Cultural Council, which are then allocated to the various Local Cultural Councils groups.

Applications may be filled out and submitted online at www.mass-culture.org/Wendell. Paper applications may also be sent electronically by the Wendell Cultural Council by request. Contact Budine at wendelllocalcc@gmail.com with questions.
