The 33rd annual Welcome Yule! Midwinter Celebration comes to Shea Theatre on Avenue A in Turners Falls on Dec. 8, 9 and 10.
Welcome Yule! celebrates the return of the light with a festive family show filled with music, dance, songs and stories to drive the dark away.
This year, Welcome Yule! travels back to its roots as it celebrates the return of the sun on the winter solstice. People around the globe have celebrated the change of the seasons for millennia. The coming of winter foreshadows cold dark times, but with the Yule sunrise comes the promise of the return of light, warmth and rebirth.
In Welcome Yule’s mythical medieval village, all in attendance will join to celebrate the bounty of the harvest at the end of the old year — and the magical beginning of the new year. As the sun rises through the megaliths of an ancient stone circle, the cast will recall the old ways of nature and religion in a reverent, joyful, community festival.
Welcome Yule’s signature wassailing songs and carols will be on the program, along with some new music sure to become favorites. Border morris and a mummers play will also be included, along with the passing of the Yule log and the Abbots Bromley horn dance.
Welcome Yule! will be held on Friday, Dec. 8, and Saturday, Dec. 9, at 7:30 p.m. both nights, and on Sunday, Dec. 190, at 2 p.m.
Reserved tickets may be picked up at the door. Admission is $12 general, $10 seniors and children, and free for children 4 and younger.
Tickets are available at World Eye Bookshop in Greenfield, Amherst Books in Amherst and Broadside Books in Northampton.
