Local Roundup: Mahar’s Ava Chiodo takes 4th place to pace wrestling team at MIAA Girls Championship

The Mahar Regional girls wrestling team had a strong showing at the MIAA Girls All-State tournament in Methuen on Saturday.

Ava Chiodo fell to eventual All-State champion Anna DaSilva by fall (1:17) in the quarterfinals of the 113-pound bracket.

Chiodo then battled her way to the third-place bout in the consolation bracket, losing by fall (1:22) to Emma Sheehan of Wayland.

The fifth-seeded Chiodo took down No. 3  Carmen Ortiz of Marlborough by fall (5:12) in the consolation semifinals.

Before that, she won by technical fall (18-2) over No. 6 Destiny Cruz of Chicopee.

Anaray Yang made it to the quarterfinals of the 120-pound bracket, losing a 12-7 decision to Rhiannon McNett of Plymouth.

Yang pinned (1:00) Rachel  Mora-Berly in her first consolation match.

Sophia Whitman had a 6-4 lead on the scoreboard in the consolation bracket but lost by fall (3:24) to Kylie O’Connell of Gloucester.

Anya Roberts also lost to an eventual All-State finalist and ended up fourth in the 177-pound bracket. 

Roberts won a 7-5 decision in the consolation bracket before getting pinned (1:34) by Aliceya Lopez of Springfield-Central in the third-place match.

• In the boys All-State Tournament over the weekend, Mahar Regional’s Jon Mahony forfeited his final match in the 113-pound consolation bracket, finishing eighth.


The UMass lacrosse team pulled off an upset of the top-ranked team in the country on Saturday at Garber Field.

The Minutemen knocked off No. 1 Yale, 13-10. It was the first time in recorded history that the program defeated a top-ranked team. 

Billy Philpott scored four times for the Minutemen with Matt Knote making 12 saves in net. 

Senior midfielder Jeff Trainor added four points with two goals and two assists, while sophomore attack Gabriel Procyk and junior midfielder Kevin Tobin each scored twice.

Jack Geiger, Charlie O’Brien and Mike Tobin each added a goal.

The Deerfield Academy girls hockey team lost to Loomis, 2-0, on Saturday at home.     

On Friday, the Deerfield Academy girls basketball team beat Choate, 57-39, at home

The Deerfield Academy boys basketball team also picked up a home win on Friday, beating Choate, 74-49.

The Deerfield boys hockey team completed an undefeated night for the Big Green, with a 1-0 home win over Westminster.

On Sunday, the Deerfield Academy boys squash team placed third at the NEPSAC Championships with a 3-2 win over Belmont Hill on Sunday in Wallingford, Conn.

The Deerfield Academy girls squash team placed third at the NEPSAC Championships at home.



The Liberty Tax Service FCHA Bantam Green team beat Keene 5-4 on Sunday at Collins-Moylan Arena.

Matt Lavoine scored the game-winning goal with 1 minute, 23 seconds left in the game on assists from Trevor Kuchieski  (two assists) and Will Miskovich.

Lavoine scored two goals with an assist while Hunter Smith added a goal with two assists Brodie Gagne and Eathon Bryant both  scored with Evan Galli adding a helper for FCHA.

In net, Will Cowie stopped 38 saves shot. Jayson Smith, Jaxon Lavallee, Miskovich and Dylan Archer paced the defense.


The Valley Storm softball team is hosting a trivia night fundraiser at the Greenfield Elks Lodge on Saturday, March 7 beginning at 7 p.m. 

The event is 21-plus and attendees are able to bring their own food and snacks. There are no outside drinks allowed as there will be a cash bar. 

There will be multiple rounds of trivia in various categories, a raffle table with numerous prizes and a 50/50 raffle.

Teams are ma de up of up to eight people, with a $10 entry fee per person. There is a cash prize for the top team.
