Olivia Whittier finished 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke to pace the Turners Falls swimming contingent at the West/Central Division 2 Swimming and Diving Championships at Springfield College on Sunday.
Whittier finished in 1 minute, 14 seconds to score the top 10 showing.
Whittier also competed in the 50-free for the Thunder, placing 18th (26.95). The time was a personal best for Whittier.
Jade Tyler finished 12th in the 200 IM (2:28.40) and 18th in the 100 butterfly (1:07.95). Both finishes were personal bests for Tyler.
Even with the personal-best performances,both swimmers finished short of qualifying for state competition.
“You always want to make the states cut,” Turners Falls coach Colin Machat said. “But they were happy with how they did and where they placed. They have one more year.”
The lone representative of the Turners Falls boys team, senior Cameron Bradley, placed 15th in the 100 butterfly (59.75).
The time was a personal best for Bradley but he did not qualify for the state meet.
“A little bittersweet,” Machat said. “He wanted to make states but ending on that note, he was more than happy.”
Boys basketballMonson 64, Greenfield 53 – David Carey scored 17 points, but the Green Wave lost to the Mustangs on the road in independent play on Saturday.
Maverick Ward and Julius Brewington both chipped in offensively with 10 and nine points, respectively.
The Wave had a hard time containing 1,000 point scorer Logan Gerry, who scored 35 points for the Mustangs.
Granby 70, Mohawk Trail 44 – The Warriors could not stay with the Rams in a road independent loss on Saturday.
Granby led 46-27 at halftime.
Reuben Bassett scored 16 points with nine rebounds for Mohawk.
Anthony Moffatt scored five points and dished out five assists.
South Hadley 64, Mahar 57 – A fourth quarter surge for the Senators came up short in a road independent loss to the Tigers on Saturday night.
Mahar cut a double-digit deficit to four points in the fourth but could not get closer.
Charlie Barnes scored 19 points with six rebounds for Mahar.
Jake Tenney (17 points) and Jakob Carron (11 points) also reached double-figures.
Wrestling Mahar 41, Weymouth 39 – The Senators edged Weymouth in Haverhill on Saturday.
Jeff Kidwell won a 4-2 decision over Devon Getz at 120-pounds.
Domanic Cacciolfli pinned (1:27) PJ Cullivan at 126-pounds. Todd Chiasson (160), Anthony Nye (170) and Gracin Bisceglia (195) all picked up wins for the Senators.
Haverhill 39, Mahar 39 – The Senators tied Haverhill with help from wins by Jeff Kidwell, Chiasson, Nye and Bisceglia.
Bisceglia had a 21-15 lead in the third period before winning by fall (5:38) over Joe Meehan at 195-pounds.
Mahar 48, Merrimack 30 – Issa Gilmore opened the win over Merrimack with a pin (1:09) of Anthony Maglio at 106-pounds.
Jon Mahony (113), Jeff Kidwell and Cacciolfi followed with wins by fall to give Mahar a 24-0 lead after four matches.
Henry Gilmore pinned Colin Jones at 152-pounds (1:15).
Andover 67, Mahar 12 – Issa Gilmore and Mahony picked up the lone wins for the Senators in the team loss to Andover.
Gilmore pinned Mitch Keamy in 31 seconds while Mahony pinned Patrick Layman in 50 seconds.
Frontier 42, Leominster 24
Josiah Quincy 48, Frontier 24 – The Red Hawks split at a tri-meet in Leominster on Saturday.
In the win over Leominster, Victor McNutt (138), Jake Mattson (152), Ito McMillan (160), KC Mattson (170) and Connor Hoffman all won by fall.
Jake Mattson and McMillan both went 2-0 on the day with two pins.
Gilbert 47, Mohawk 24 – The Warriors, wresting in Southwick on Saturday, could not get a win on the mats in a loss to Gilbert.
Westfield 39, Mohawk 24 – Jaden Moore won at 152-pounds in the team loss to the Bombers.
Moore pinned Daniel Ptashuk (4:00).
Ethan Bower won at 195-pounds, pinning (4:48) Jeffrey Robinson.
Nordic skiing The Mohawk Trail girls team placed third at the Berkshire Nordic League Ski Race on Saturday at Prospect Mountain in Woodford, Vt. on Saturday.
Erika Looman finished fifth overall for the Warriors with a time of 24:32.
Elsewhere for Mohawk, Katarzyna Wisnauckas placed 18th (27:58), Liliana Manley placed 25th (29:26), Eleanor Meunier placed 33rd (31:58) and Sylvie Mahon-Moore placed 35th (32:07).
Northfield Mount Hermon's Hollin Keyser-Parker of Ashfield placed 12th (26:26). Teammate Celeste DeLeo of Plainfield came in 19th (28:12).
Mount Greylock swept both the girls and boys races.
Vincent Gauthier placed 39th (29:14) for the Mohawk boys team, followed by Daniel Tetreault in 41st (29:16) and West Williams in 49th (34:03).
