Wedegartner, Desorgher fundraising even in Greenfield mayoral campaign

GREENFIELD — With final campaign finance reports filed, new figures from the Office of Campaign and Political Finance show the city’s two mayoral candidates raised similar amounts of money, and that former incumbent Roxann Wedegartner outspent newly elected Mayor Ginny Desorgher by nearly $4,000 in 2023.

Year-end reports filed this month show Wedegartner raised $17,962 against $21,855 in expenditures, while Desorgher raised $18,319 and expended $18,069. Their 2023 campaigns began in May and March, respectively.

Desorgher defeated Wedegartner in November’s election, earning 72% of the vote, or 3,107 votes compared to Wedegartner’s 1,144. Desorgher was inaugurated as the city’s fourth mayor on Jan. 2.

While both candidates raised nearly the same in the early days of their campaigns, a busy July for Wedegartner saw her raise $6,216 to Desorgher’s $1,109 that month. In August, fundraising evened out, with Desorgher raising about $600 more than her opponent. In September, Desorgher again outraised Wedegartner by more than $1,300.

In the final lead-up to the election, though, fundraising amped up slightly. Money from private residents filled Desorgher’s coffers while many community and business leaders raised money for Wedegartner — a trend also observed in July and August.

In October, Wedegartner raised $5,239, with local business owners and other community leaders leading the way, including Gilmore & Farrell Insurance President and former City Councilor Tim Farrell ($500), Joseph Ruggeri of Ruggeri Real Estate ($250), Greenfield Community Energy and Technology (GCET) General Manager John Lunt ($250), Gilmore & Farrell owner Robert Gilmore ($100) and Deputy Police Chief William Gordon ($100), among others.

Desorgher, on the other hand, raised $2,678 in October, as private residents paced her donations, including Owen Weaver, who is listed as a self-employed freelance writer ($500), as well as Greenfield residents Nancy Hazard ($500), Susan Worgaftik ($250), Doris Doyle ($250) and Carol Letson ($200).

Expenditures in October far outpaced any other months for both campaigns, with Wedegartner expending $11,291 and Desorgher spending $7,194. Much of the funding went toward advertisements, with Wedegartner spending $4,474 on ads in the Greenfield Recorder and on WHAI, while Desorgher spent a total of $4,973 on ads with the Recorder, Western Mass Radio Group and WRSI.

The 2023 campaign featured similar fundraising numbers to Greenfield’s last mayoral election 2019. In that race, Wedegartner was once again the leading fundraiser with $21,059 raised against $20,817 in spending. The other candidates, Brickett Allis and Sheila Gilmour, raised $11,152 and $15,730 while spending $10,729 and $13,766, respectively.
