WARWICK — A special election will be held Nov. 6 to fill the Selectboard seat previously occupied by Dawn Magi.

Magi’s term would have ended in May 2019. The election is for the remainder of her term.

“I enjoyed Dawn Magi’s presence on the board,” Pruyne said at the Selectboard’s meeting Monday night. “I always appreciated Dawn’s sense of humor and her quiet dignity. I have nothing against Dawn Magi.”

The town is required to wait at least 64 days after the resignation of a Selectboard member before holding a special election, Pruyne said. The November date was chosen for that reason, but also because it is the same day as the general election.

“It’s going to save a little money because we’re already going to have election workers here. This saves the town money over having it separately,” said Town Clerk Rosa Fratangelo.

Although the two elections will be on the same day, there will be separate ballots and separate ballot boxes. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Nomination papers will likely be available by the end of the week, Fratangelo said, “as soon as I get written notification from the Selectboard.” A nomination requires at least 20 valid signatures of Warwick residents, she said.

Background

Magi submitted her letter of resignation, effective immediately, on July 2.

“I choose not to work in a hostile environment,” Magi said at the time. She cited disagreements with the other two Selectboard members, Doc Pruyne and Jim Erviti, as the reason for her resignation, although she did not elaborate.

Magi was elected to the Selectboard in 2010. She had served on the Finance Committee for five years before that. She said she has not yet decided whether she will be involved in town government in other capacities in the future.

“I will miss the board because I enjoyed the work very much and I feel that I gained experience and knowledge every year,” Magi said. “I will miss working with David (Young) because he was very smart.”
