High Schools/Bulletin Board: Turners Falls girls volleyball downs Athol

Taylor Greene dished 10 assists and added a kill and an ace to lead the Turners Falls girls volleyball team to a 3-0 victory on the road against Athol on Tuesday. 

Madi Liimatainen added five kills, seven aces and a dig while Emily Young recorded seven kills, two aces and a dig for the Thunder in the win. 

Turners came out firing in its first match of the season, taking the first set, 25-6. The Thunder took the second set, 25-17, before earning the win with a 25-7 triumph in the third set. 

“They were an overall stronger, more experienced team,” Bears coach Donna Lajoie said. 

Lexi Forte had two assists for Athol, with Laney Florentino finishing with an assist and Kate Mahan notching an ace. 

Ultimate Frisbee

Four Rivers Charter Public School is seeking an ultimate Frisbee coach for the upcoming fall season. 

They’re looking for a qualified candidate who knows and understands ultimate, has a positive attitude and loves to coach.

Babe Ruth

The Franklin County Babe Ruth Baseball League is holding its 2021 preregistration meeting on Tuesday, March 30 at 6 p.m.

The meeting is at the Babe Ruth Complex at Abercrombie Field, located behind the Center School in Greenfield. Parents of returning and new players as well as those interested in coaching and volunteering are encouraged to attend. Agenda items include registration, player draft and opening day dates, season and playoff timetables. 

The league is open to players 13-15 years old, as well as 12-year-olds playing on a full size diamond and those turning 16 after January of this year.

West County Baseball

The West County Baseball Association (WCBA) has began its annual sign-ups for the Mantle and Koufax summer baseball teams. The teams compete in the Pioneer Valley Youth Baseball League and is open to players who are currently in their junior year of high school or younger.

Those interested are encouraged to contact the WCBA to be put on a list for the upcoming tryout for Mantle teams, which will take place in April. Players 14 and younger and are at the minimum in seventh grade should contact the WCBA for a tryout to compete on the Koufax team.

Registration for Greenfield Minor League Baseball closes Friday at 6 p.m. To register, go to GMLB.org. 

Tryouts will be held on Saturday at Lunt Field, with times set on Friday after the league knows how many have registered in order to break the tryouts into COVID-safe groups. 

Tryout times will be posted on GMLB.org and on the GMLB’s Facebook page.
