GREENFIELD — Local veterans will soon have a place to go every week for a hot meal.
Starting this Thursday, Building Bridges, an organization sponsored by The Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts, will host a luncheon every week at noon in the Elks lodge on Church Street.
“It’s just a place where veterans can meet and talk over a hot meal, and maybe find out some information on veteran’s services,” said Chad Wright, Building Bridges’ Greenfield site director, who’s helping to organize the weekly meals. Around veterans’ holidays such as Memorial Day, Wright said the luncheons will host “special programming,” including speakers and music.
This week, Wright noted that Greenfield’s Mayor William Martin and a few local Episcopal Church leaders will attended for the luncheon’s kickoff, presenting the organization with donations.
According to the Building Bridges’ website, the luncheons stem from a commitment “to the embrace and reconciliation of veterans who continue to be isolated from the very society they fought to protect.”
Elsewhere in the region, similar luncheons for veterans are held in Northampton, Springfield and Holyoke.
“We’re actively looking for volunteers and donations, whether food or monetary,” Wright said, requesting that those interested in volunteering or giving call 413-834-7153.
