BRATTLEBORO, Vt. – The Vermont Public Utility Commission will conduct a public hearing on Jan. 4 on the petition for ownership transfer of Entergy Nuclear Vermont Yankee Corp. to NorthStar Group Services.

The 7 p.m. hearing in Brattleboro Union High School’s Multi-Purpose Room will be preceded at 6 p.m. by a Department of Public Service informational session during which time NorthStar and Entergy Vermont Yankee will answer questions about the proposed ownership transfer.

Transfer of ownership that would allow NorthStar to assume control of decommissioning the shuttered Vernon reactor, as well as restoration of the site, is also under review by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The public hearing is in anticipation of formal evidentiary hearings by the PUC that are scheduled for Jan. 22 through 26 in Montpelier.

The state PUC has said it expects to decide by April 2018 whether to grant a Certificate of Public Good on the proposed sale of the nuclear plant company’s assets, and Entergy hopes to complete by the end of 2018.

The result would be a decommissioning beginning by the end of 2021 and completed by the end of 2030, rather than 2075 as originally envisioned.
