SHELBURNE — Taryn Laplante, a 22-year-old woman from Chicopee, died after her car struck a tree and rolled over on Colrain-Shelburne Road Sunday at about 12:40 a.m.

Laplante was extricated from the Honda CR-Z by Shelburne and Greenfield fire departments and flown by LifeStar medical helicopter to Springfield’s Baystate Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, State Police Lt. Tom Ryan said Monday.

A 20-year-old woman from Springfield was the only passenger, Ryan said. Colrain Ambulance transported the woman to Greenfield’s Baystate Franklin Medical Center with minor injuries.

According to police, the accident occurred when Laplante’s vehicle — traveling southbound near the Colrain-Shelburne town line — crossed the center line, veered off the roadway and struck a tree, causing the car to roll over.

The cause of the accident and Laplante’s death are under investigation by troopers assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office as well as two State Police sections: Collision Analysis and Reconstruction and Crime Scene Services, Ryan said.

Shelburne and Colrain fire departments were dispatched to the accident. Greenfield and Shelburne Falls fire departments assisted.

Colrain-Shelburne Road was closed and traffic was detoured for more than four hours, according to a Shelburne Fire Department news release .
