BERNARDSTON — A vehicle fire destroyed a van in Bernardston early Wednesday afternoon.

The van stopped on the side of Eden Trail and the single occupant of the van was able to safely get out of the vehicle before it turned into a “roaring fire,” as reported by the police scanner around 1 p.m.

A column of smoke could be seen rising over the mountain from County Club Road.

A Leyden police officer and cruiser blocked the road at the intersection between Eden Trail and Eden Trail Branch Road. On the other side, Bernardston Police Chief James Palmeri directed traffic back down the road while firefighters ensured the flames were extinguished.

It is not yet clear how the fire started. The incident is still under investigation.
