UMass student found dead in dorm

AMHERST — A senior mathematics major was found dead in his room Wednesday, University of Massachusetts Amherst officials said.

The student was identified as Jonathan Shaw, 24, of Newton, the university said in a statement. Details about the cause of Shaw’s death were not immediately known Wednesday evening.

UMass spokesman Edward Blaguszewski said in an email that UMass Police discovered Shaw in his room at Lewis Hall at 11:49 a.m. Wednesday.

The Northwestern district attorney’s office referred questions about the death to UMass.

UMass provided the following resources in its message to the campus community: Center for Counseling and Psychological Health, ​Office of Religious and Spiritual Life, dean of students office and Faculty and Staff Assistance Program.
